Beach series with Dawn #1 – North end of Brigantine, 2nd try
March 14, 2022 @ 10:15 am - 2:15 pm
Must be a member of the Outdoor Club of South Jersey to attend. Please visit ocsj.org to join.
This will be one of 8 hikes on or near beaches. The others are: Longport Beach, Ocean City Boardwalk, Corson’s Inlet and southern tip of OC, North Wildwood seawall and Wildwood Boardwalk, around the tip of Cape May, Highs Beach (on Delaware Bay), and Thompson’s Beach (also on Delaware Bay). They will vary from 3 miles to 7 miles; but all at a slow to moderate pace. Most hikes will incorporate breaks; the long hikes multiple breaks with a 20 minute lunch break.
The North end of Brigantine is a State Natural Area. We will start near the lookout tower at the far end of the dirt parking lot and walk to Brigantine channel. Along the way you will see pilings from old lifeguard stations on the low tide and up in the dunes, you can look for foxes and the reclusive snowy owl, never know when you might get lucky with a sighting. If not too cold I will be stopping for 20 minutes for an extended snack/lunch at the top. This hike is about 6 miles long on mostly wet firmish sand.
Pace will be about 24 minute miles or 2.5 miles per hour which allows for photo and potty breaks. (Though on beach so no privacy!) My motto is “If you need to slow down or stop, let me know; if you are in a hurry you picked the wrong leader.”
Will be meeting in the large dirt lot past the end of East Beach Avenue opposite the end of the 4×4 beach entrance. Last time I was here there were no port-a-potties.
I will give the safety talk at 10:15 and then start.
Bring water, snack, and lunch; dress appropriately for the weather on the beach..
Cold rain, deep snow, or high winds cancels/postpones.
How to find me: Dark blue-grey Toyota Sienna minivan. I’ll be in a skirt!
